The Cape Peninsula University of Technology is an established educational institution in the Western Cape of South Africa. One Niche area established focuses on the use of ICT in e-Commerce and Community Informatics. (http://www.cput.ac.za)
This research emanated from this Niche area understanding that the Internet and associated technologies present SMMEs with opportunities to compete with larger counterparts, but often grapple with entry-level e-commerce adoption issues. SMMEs are often oblivious to the requirement to integrate the Internet and Web-based technologies into their business strategies and processes.
Some impeding factors for online trading are; lack of knowledge of the Internet, uncertainty of online trading benefits and e-commerce adoption fears. Not evident in literature is the absence of no formalised adoption strategies to maximise SMME adoption of e-Commerce. The above Niche area formed the basis of the research and doctoral study of Stuart Warden.
